About Us & What We Do
Based on the outskirts of Bristol, we are specialist stage builders for the film, TV, theatre, music and gaming industries. Our employees and freelance staff are skilled carpenters, scenic artists, metal workers, CAD designers and production professionals, building custom made structures and bespoke props for a wide range of clients in the UK and across the globe.
In addition to our core team, we work closely with an extensive range of specialist suppliers, fabricators and crafts people.
We are renowned across the industry for the quality of our work, the expertise and skill of our workforce and our ability to deliver and build complex and challenging projects on schedule and within budget. We have developed strong relationships with our clients, many of whom we have worked with on multiple projects over many years.
These include the Brit Awards, Commonwealth Games, Disney, The Olivier Awards, Beyonce (live tour), Glastonbury Festival, Netflix, League of Legends and a wide range of theatre shows including Lord of the Rings, The Full Monty, Kinky Boots and Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express.
Our Workshop
With ten and a half thousand square feet and a substantial outside space, our workshop facilities include a metal and wood shop, scenic finishing department and a cutting-edge CNC machine. We can produce large-scale metal work, fabrication and joinery in-house, and have the facility to engrave, cut and make fully custom set pieces.
Sustainability
At Four Square we are taking action to reduce our impact on the environment. Based on an audit of our processes and materials we are now implementing several changes and initiatives where we hope to make a difference.
We kick start 2025 by pledging the first donation to a new campaign from the Wildlife and Wetlands Trust (WWT) at Steart Marshes in Somerset. Together with singer-songwriter David Gray, the WWT are aiming to create and restore 100,000 hectares of wetlands in the UK. Wetlands are weapons of mass creation, offering a solution to both the climate and nature crises. These magical habitats soak up carbon from the atmosphere, protect communities from flooding, boost our moods and provide homes for 40% of the world’s wildlife and plants. You can donate with us via this link here David Gray tour | WWT To learn more about the wonderful Steart Marshes click here and watch David talking about the benefits of wetlands here
Other organisations who are helping us on our sustainability journey include SevernNet and the West of England Combined Authority (WECA), who recently launched the Local Industrial Decarbonisation plan. The plan brings together experts across climate science and industry, and as a local business we directly benefit from this expertise.
What People Are Saying
“Jem and Neil have played a pivotal role in some major production projects with Chromatic. These include the Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony in 2022 and the D-Day 80th Commemoration Concert in Portsmouth in 2024. These are just two standout examples from over 20 years of collaboration with them as 4-Square and previously as Steel Monkey.
They bring incredible expertise to every project they undertake. Their unique ability to seamlessly merge exceptional design and engineering with logistical precision and teamwork ensures the smooth execution of an event and fosters a positive, collaborative and fun working relationship.
They are truly indispensable in delivering scenic construction for events of all scales; small, large and high-profile spectacles!”

“You have made the most amazing set. So many people have commented on the quality of it and how stunning the statues are. The details like the mirror down the walkways, the slickness of the finishes and edges, are so impressive.
Thank you so much for being so helpful and lovely to my team and for delivering a fantastic set.”

“Please make sure that everyone from your team knows how much we appreciate all of the long hours and hard work it took to get to this stage. The fact that a frame from South Africa and cladding from Bristol actually fitted together is a testament to both sides.
You guys did an amazing job!”

“The true star of the show is undoubtedly the breathtaking staging, by acclaimed designer Mike Britton.
The set is exquisite, breathtakingly beautiful, and will live on in the memory long after the whodunnit clues and red herrings are forgotten.
Gorgeous polished walnut carriages, illuminated by golden lamplight, shuttered by pull-down roller blinds, meet end to end, break apart and unlock, and revolve to serve as the train corridor, the sleeping compartments and the dining car where the denouement finally unfolds.
In the background, shadows, sound effects, and video imagery on a huge screen help to give the staging speed, movement and motion.”
